Hello all, this is my first time posting here so I would like to thank everyone on here who is kind enough to help people like me. I am a noob when it comes to the world of decorative concrete. I have been impressed by the results overlays can produce. I have decided to install (retrofit) a hydronic radiant heat system in my newly purchased home and I would love to do an overlayment over the system. I plan on placing the either 1/2" or 3/4 pex right on top of the plywood subfloor wedged in between sleepers that have aluminum attached to the surface. The tubing will be spaced every 6-8". I need to know what my options are for putting an overlayment on this type of set up.

- Can I place a micro-topping directly over the aluminum faced sleepers allowing the base coat to fill the crevices within the channels and cover the tubing? If I can do this is it necessary to apply any more base coats before I apply the finish coat?

-If a micro topping can be done over a radiant heat based subfloor, is there a minimum thickness it should be in order to handle the heat or any other factors associated with radiant heat?

- I was also thinking of lying 1/2" durock cement board on top of the subfloor prior to the micro-topping. Are there any negatives or positives for using the durock?

Any advice will be hugely appreciated. Thanks folks

welcome aboard - we all started out as newbies so you'll fit right in.

retrofit hydronic & dec conc o'lays can coexist quite well but not to alum stay-in-place forms,,, why not remove the ' screed ' rails, fill in the slots, & proceed ?

thickness depends on your skill w/chosen mtl + mtl characteristics,,, if this's diy-h/o work & NOT as a pro, remember your apron store has only plastic sheeting that's worthwhile buying for this craft.

We usually recommend installing at least 3/8" thick self leveling concrete (Param 5500) and apply a coat of micro-topping at 1/16" thick (Sgraffino). You can acid stain or dye the Sgraffino and seal it.

If you just want to dye and seal it, you do not have to install the micro-topping. Param 5500 can be used as a wear surface. Pls call me if you need to discuss further.
