We are use to putting down the overlays and then adding sawcuts. Client previously had an overlay put down and upon the company sealing.. They blew her basement up.. yes.. it combusted. They were out of their home for 4 months...

We now have the job.. complete redo of the basement floor. The company previously used a tape down method with to acheive the squares. Clients want this done again.. they do not want sawcuts.

My husband and I are arguing what is the best way to do the overlayment, using tape..

I keep thinking if one puts the first layer down, then tapes.. then applies the overlayment ( color intergral) then bubble gum release , stamp, and then leave the tape to add the antiquing agent.. to acheive the colors... needed.. but now heres the issues... removing the tape.. wouldn't the tape dry and cure into the lovely overlayment.. pulling tape up ... would then chip the overlay or the tape wont come up at all. Or his idea.. tape down.. etc remove tape.. before it dries to much.. then come back next day and dye each square.. UGHHHHHH.. by hand.. over each square he's lost his mind.. to me thats too time consuming as opposed to spraying the choosen antiquing agent or dye,... The client does not want acid stain!!! btw!!! so if I have it my way.. wouldnt the antique agent.. also then bleed under the tape.. that is also my fear.

So all you overlay installers that use tape to acheive your looks

What and how do you advise .... since we always sawcut the designs in... those that do use the tape method...
Please dish.. step by step... and which product do you use???

thanks so much

Tape works fine for thin trowel down overlayments, but for stamped overlays its hard.

If you are using a light texture skin then you could do it. Trowel down a base coat in whatever color you want your joints to be. After it dries tape out your pattern with the strong fiber tape. I would overlay it as thin as possible but still be able to get a good texture. if you go too thick you are going to play hell getting the tape up without chipping up all the edges.

Color it all the next day with colored liquid release then pull your tape. You will probably have some areas that you might have to touch up with color once you pull the tape but shouldnt be a big deal if your overlay wasnt too thick.

Also keep in mind that your overlay is going to dry out quicker the thinner you go, so dont get ahead of yourself, just do sections at a time so you are sure it doesnt get too hard before you get the texture on it
