Hey guys I see that no one here uses Metakaolin in there mixes. I replace 15% of my portland cement with Metakaolin, note I said REPLACE. Metakaolin will add a significant boost to the compressive and flexural strength to your concrete. Concrete that normally has a compression strength of 5000 psi. can be boosted to a compresive strength of over 10,000 psi. Metakaolin will also greatly reduce staining and acid staining from lemon juice, vinigar ect. Note concrete that contains metakaolin will not take an acid stain. You should still however seal your countertops.

Geeze 40 lbs. for $60 . You can buy this from W.R. Grace but the smallest unit they sell is a pallet. However, I don't remember the price but it was pretty cheap. A pallet would give you a lifetime supply.

Its about $16.00 a bag in pallet form and a pallet lasted me about 8 months or so doing avg 75 to 100 sq ft a week of ctops.

I also acid stain my GFRC concrete with no trouble.

With my mix design the finished product is so dense there are no pin holes before or after grinding and if I do get any there are only a hand full meaning no slurry coating ect.

I use MetaMax by Englehard. I have used a few different pozzolans, and like the MetaMax the best. Go to

http://www.engelhard.com/wrapper.aspx?xml=engelhard

to get contact info on a distributor near you. I purchase mine from near Dallas. It cost me about $150 each time I buy. Don't fall over when the cost seems high for the weight it goes a long way.

I believe the concretedepot.com sells it. I replace 10% cement with kaolin. The weight difference is significant.

Hey guys!! I have found a new place to purchace Metakaolin. Go to directcolors.com. They have it but you have to call them. They sell MetaMax. It will run you about $45.00 per 50 lb. bag. I have found the metamax to be far more superior than Power Poz. Its ground finer. The phone number is on their web site.

I just got off the phone with the production manager at Directcolors and he informed me that they only sell Metamax to distributers. He was willing to make me a "deal" but his price was not so much of a deal... $110 plus shipping for a 55# bag. I declined.

Anyone else have an idea of where to get Metamax? I would like to compare it to the PowerPozz.

You can get 40# bags of Metakaolin for $27.95 from Concrete Countertop Supply by the bag. We replace 15% of our cement with it and it works great!

Go to www.concretecountertopsupply.com to find ordering info...or call them at 847-648-3474

How do you measure the performance of Metakaolin powders? We currently use PowerPozz and are looking to switch to Vitro Minerals when we find a way to monitor the differences.

Thanks!

Stupid question here, but could one use non-shrink grout instead of the p-poz or metakaolin? What are the pro's and/or con's of using a mix with a high percentage of non-shrink grout included in the mix?

I maybe mistaken...cannot be for sure about the grout but pozzolons offer better particle packing ability as they are smaller particles and when they combine with cement sand agg etc you get tighter mix from better gradation.

Is Metakaolin compatible with all types of cement?

I am having issues with severely elongated curing times using gray type II-V and 15% metakaolin and 8% pigment loading.

Using an overnight curing cycle which is normally 1400psi is giving me a tray full of brownies the next day.

Any suggestions? I have used metakaolin successfully with white type I for awhile, but for a better color enhancement, I'm experimenting with gray cement and banging my head against the wall....

Hi aaron, Just curious. I am casting concree tiles and using 10%metalaolin and no more than 5% pigment and am also experiencing elongated curing times. You say "issue resolved". What did you do?

I was experimenting with SCC, and my Superplastisizer levels slowly crept up through expirmentation, and before I knew it, it was way out of whack.

That was an exhausting mistake... Absolutely nothing to do with the Metakaolin.

Interesting. I'll have to be more careful. I've certainly upped my dose of SuperP since I've started using the metakaolin. I cast concrete mosaics, essentially a mortar mix, and I was quite happy with a .32 water/cement ratio. The shapes I cast are small and geometric and I need flow to place the concrete. I am basically slip casting concrete. But the metakaolin gummed it up a bit so I've been adding more SP. I obviously have room to play with my water content. Guess I have a little more adjusting to do.

thanks for cluing me in,

Libby

Hi Aaron,

Go to Polished Concrete forum page 3 and look for "finishing concrete mosaics". I have 1 picture there. That's 28 pieces in 6 sq. inches. tedious as hell. I'm starting to scale up my designs so I can finish them in the shop but there's still something wonderful about a monolithic polish so I may still try to get down on my hands and knees...
