I just opened my Workers Comp Policy Renewal. It is ove $7,700 for next year! Anyone else have this high of a bill? I only have 4 full time employees, two part timers and have never filed a claim. Talk about increased over head.
Any suggestions or thoughts?

what's your %, deem ?,,, we're at 12.15% which i think's outrageous but we're classified as concrete,,, likewise no claims,,, 2nd yr w/this carrier.
did see something on concretelocator's board couple years back about a ' dec conc ' class but my agent/carrier's not been able to locate it in naics - http://www.census.gov/naics/2007/def/ND238990.HTM#N238990

NC WC is awful! You must have a sizeable payroll to be whacked with at premium like that!

Yes, this is workers comp only. My payroll not including myself is $100,000. I anticipate that going up next year. To me all this is is lagalized rackateiring. You have to have it, if you use it the premuims go up.

Check and see if your Home Builder Association has a "Self Insured Fund"....mine does and once a member of the group you can get W/C thru them for a reasonable rate. Another advantage is being able to pay monthly. And, there is an annual rebate paid back to companies with no claims.

Our concrete "aftermarket industry" needs a lobbyist and our own distinct classification code when it comes to Workmans' Compensation Insurance. Conservably speaking, there are probably more professional decorative concrete contractors as their are those that specialize in many other trades who have "their own distinct classifications."
On another note, if you take a certified "defensive driving course," automobile insurance companies will provide you with a discounted rate ... ergo, if you are a skilled professional that has taken trade related specialty courses from ligament manufacturers,' gaining some sort of certification, then Workmans' Compensation insurance carries should take this into account (along with claims history) providing you with discounted rates.
Of course these are pipe dreams ... since insurance carriers only want/want/want as to money, continuously finding loophole ways to get even more even if you are claim free. We need to have an old fashioned Boston Tea Party and dunk them.
I have always felt there should be some sort of trade related official Architectural Concrete Association, where hundreds could band together; thereby having one loud/strong voice, in order to lobby for lower insurance rates along with other necessary business related necessities (advertising, freight rates, general liability and group health insurance, etc.).

I pay $3.74 per $100.00 of payroll. yah it is a lot. but here is something I found out.... I insure my vehicle under the artisan category. It allows me to carry my tools of the trade in my truck. It is by far the lowest rate in insurance categories. My workers are classified as artisans also, I fill out a special tax form for them from Revenue Canada and that allows them to claim on their personal income tax when they file, all of their expenses related to work. Gas, clothing, gloves, boots, vehicle repairs, etc. They would not be able to deduct such things when they file their income tax without this classification. A lot of trades are not aware of this. It literally saves them hundreds of $$$$.
Hope this tidbit helps. Oh by the way, Then the employee WANTS to pay his way to WOC so HE can have the write off on his taxes.
We both win. I don't have to cover his expenses to Vegas and he gets his tax dollars back!!
