I will be in the market for a small edger for residential and light commercial work this Summer.
I'am looking at the following machines:
Innovatech Predator 850 Easy Edge ($2900.00 est.)
http://www.innovatechproducts.com/pages/products/predator-floor-grinders/p-edge.php
Hum-Bee edger package ($ unknown)
http://www.cdclarue.com/pb/spefloor.html
ATTN: Jim Cuviello----need a price from you.
Sawtec Model 254 edger ($ unknown)
I saw this unit in person at Niagara Machine in Erie,PA
It must be an older design because I can't find a hyperlink to it.
Are any of you guys using these edgers and if so, how do they perform? Hand grinding is a PITA and I want to speed things up plus make it easier on the help.
Thanks!

How close to the edge do these machines get, considering they all have a dust shroud/skirt.
The other issue I have is "corners" Even using a 3" pad you still leave an arc or crescent in the corner.
How do you blend this in .....or don't you worry about it. It's more prominent if there is paint on the floor originally.

George , I have the Hum B, with the shroud it gets 1/4 to 3/8 inch, I still end up my knees to blend in the last little bit. James Stephans has the Innovatech, and he tells me he likes it. Big bucks Jim Cuviello has the two headed Klindex, I hear it works great$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

So I take it that even with some sort of edging tool you still need to spend time on your knees?
What sequence is everyone using for edges?
Do you do the edge first...then the floor? Do you do it grit for grit? or do you do the floor till completion then do the edges to blend?

if you do have to do edges by hand do the resins wet. So fast with great results. A good metal cut then resins wet. I am buying this thing called the racatac - http://www.racatac.com/ this tuesday. I think it will be the best edger ever........haha .we are pretty good at edging now so I am just trying to make it easier on us. I think the real thing I am looking for is a machine that will do 50% of the work and we can do the rest by hand. It's like any of these machines, there is not one that will be great in all situations. I think if your guys can master an edging tool then thats the ticket. Some guys will hate it and some will think it's great. They all take finesse. I have the hum bee yellow thing and it stays in the shop. Haven't had it out in a long time. Wish I could afford the klindex edger. jeepers.

Derek, the racatac seems as a great idea but once you put in the field you would find out that it ain’t that great unless you’re doing a spot work only.
If you are to do a continuous edge work it makes ‘your butt wiggle’ :) too much causing loss of pressure (and balance to some point) unless you somehow lock the wheels

mile,
thx for the heads up, I still think I may try it out. The guys are all excited about it. It might just be mastering the toe stopper technique. Not sure I want to see butts wiggle on my job site though.....

The trick in doing edges is to match the degree of cut on the edges compared to the rest of the floor.
Considering how close you machine gets to the edges -
1. Most people do not press their face against the wall and look at the level of clarity.
2. It is rare you will have to go above 400 resin

after 400 resin, take a twister pad and get some scissors and cut a 5 or 7 inch circle and hit the edge at high speed with that. perfect!!!

try out some edging aswell on our first floor:)
from my test run on monday with 80grit metals i was gettin
1\4 -1/2 from the wall im only 5'3" so i get pushed around a bit lol

The wheels pivot instead of the head. It runs super smooth, no chatter. Very efficient to. You can put weights right on top of the grinding head. I think they quoted me 2k. I am trying to get one but they have their first few shipments sold out. If you have a rep give them a call and try and see one.

Matt, is the following edger from Sase the one your talking about? If so, this design is the same as the Hum-Bee by Cdc Larue. I believe Cdc Larue had the first design on this machine. It seems like the other manufactures are buying and reselling the Hum-Bee under their company name.
http://www.sasecompany.com/eq_dg_spyder.htm
Blastrac appears to be selling a Hum-Bee clone and/or reselling the Hum-bee under their company name as well.
http://www.blastrac.com/en-us/pc-114-31-7-grinder-vac.aspx
I would imagine the best price would be from Jim Cuviello as he sells the Hum-Bee. He would be the first person I would talk to.

Not that POS. It is a polishing edger. I don't think they have it on their website. No those grinders on a stick have been around for a long time. sase edger is completely different.

Tom,
Yes that's the edger. We use two metal grits and let the Lavina take care of the rest. If needed go back and touch anything up with a hand grinder. Edges that use to take two guys two days now takes one guy one half day.
They have redesigned the rear wheel system to make it easier to move on and off the job.
The edger cost approximatly $3,600. There are three metal grits avaiable at a cost of $400-$480 per set. There are two to a set.
That being said we also use the Hum B for tight areas and other things.
Jim

I saw that Sase Edger out at WOC. It looks like a winner. It looks sturdy, functional and easy to use. I am not a fan of the Spyder or the Hum-B (same thing). I believe it is $2k.

I was thinking about the Innovatech Predator 850 Easy Edge ($2900.00 est.)

I guess I'll wait to see how the Sase edger looks like until I make a decision.

I was told by my salesman that the SASE is being re-designed somewhat and is not available yet, after waiting since WOC. Or maybe they saw strong demand and are going to raise the price.A friend has complained many times about SASE's service, etc. Now I'm starting to understand what he means.
