pitting, little white spots, spawing on new stamped

The stamped concrete was installed in July.
In January one section around the pool had major
spawing, almost entirely . All the other concrete
around the pool has little white spots and the start of
chipping on a smaller scale than the bad section.
It is in Peenslvania. No salt or chemicals were ever on it.
Any ideas at all what is going on and short of jack hammering it all out, how to fix? Was this an installation issue?

It seems like the surface was overworked, in cold climate applications , the use of steel trowel and fresno are not recommended, since they affect the air entrainment(it provides for room for the moisture entering the slab to go and gives concrete the ability to expand/ contract on freezing cycles without top layer delamination, flaking, spalling).

The slab can be overlayed (which won't be cheap) or dressed up(cheaper and OK up to some extent), last option will be tear out/redo(a real pain in the b....)

Good Luck!

So, Do you think it was an installation issue?

It could be any number of issues, but generally speaking, if everything looked ok until it went through a few freeze/thaw cycles, I would suspect that the mix may have had no air entrainment. This sometimes happens at the batch plant, and can be tested to see if that was the issue. The supplier will bear some responsibilty in the repair/replacement if it was left out.

Otherwise, it could have been a finishing issue - too much water, over-finished, etc.

How do we test it? All areas are spotted and scaling one area has big spots. One day when they were getting ready to pour, the concrete truck went the wrong way and got stuck for hours in the mud. They still poured. Would that add to the issues?

The Fact that the Cement truck got stuck for a few hrs with a load in the Drum certainly could be a factor in what is happening to your Pool deck. The cement in concrete will start to crystallize approx 45 mins after water is added after which point the mix would need water added to maintain workability . How much water was added could be a factor in the top spalling.

However after looking at the Pictures my guess would be that too much Release powder was left on the surface and what you are seeing, is the base colour of the cement where the sealer pulled up the release powder because the sealer couldn't bond to the concrete.

If you want to test the concrete you need to core drill a cpl samples ( the thicker the better) and have them tested which should cost approx $50 per sample
