A customer wants me to fix a job that he said was stained but not sealed. I have not seen the floor yet. He said the floor was very rough and wants it smoothed. What self leveling overlay is right for rough finished concrete floors? I have read that when pulling carpet or tile it is recommended to do an overlay. How clean does the floor need to be to do the overlay?

Very clean; free of ...laitance, efforescence, oils, waxes, curing compounds, grease/oil, glue and mastic residues, old coatings, previous resinous sealers, thin set residues of tile, and any other type of foreign matter that will impede mechanical and adhesive bond of the overlayment. Also, should have profile about like 80 grit sandpaper. Suggest that you first clean/scrub/rinse the floor, allow to dry, then sand/grind to create profile, clean again to remove all dust/etc., then apply your overlayment.

Detailed information on necessary surface prep, profiling of substrate you are going over, etc. will all be in written form on the tech data/application information pages of the overlayment manufacturer.
