Method I have successfully used for a great many years...

(1) Attach a thin mil/diamond pattern lath over the plywood using a hammer stapler; go back and hammer all staples that were not flat down. Make sure that the lath joints do not line up with plywood joints. This will reinforce the plywood substrate and transfer movement out over a large area instead of being concentrated along the plywood joints.

(2) Encapsulate the plywood/lath surface with a flexible, non-biodegradable, self-leveling elastomeric membrane/liquid rubber. This will provide a seamless rubber waterproof shield/bladder; so, if your overlayment ever does develop an fine/hairline fissures moisture can't migrate down to the plywood which can cause moisture related decay issues.

(3) While using a squeegee to float the self-leveling liquid rubber/elastomeric membrane out over the lath, broadcast fine sand particles into it, to create a rough profile thus promoting maximum mechanical bonding of your overlayment.
