 Removing sealer from microtopping

I acid stained Colormakers microtopping, Pentimento and the stain didn't come out good at all. I used a white base because I was going by Colormakers charts and I made small samples and the samples and overall product didn't match at all. I put two coats of sealer on and now I'm at a loss on how to strip two coats of sealer, restain with a darker color and then reaply sealer. Any suggestions?

Phone Gary Jones and ask him. you will find him to be very helpful. I use Colormaker products and have found that before staining Pentimento you should sand it lightly with 100 grit sandpaper. The amount of polymer residue on the surface of the Pentimento impedes penetration of the stain. Usually any polymer topping requires a light sanding before staining to open it up unless you sell the "look" of the lighter areas as a unique treatment.

you really can't strip the sealer. you'll ruin the micro topping in the process. solvent will break down the polymer in the overlay. soy stripper would stain it unevenly. you're going to have to grind or sand then reskim with overlay.

ouch! What type of sealer did you use? Not to disagree with usconc, but I have used solvent with micros. As long as absolutely every step in your process is completely clean it will work. The solvent punches through, turns your topping into goo and then sets up as one layer. A little risky with multi layer systems. If you used an epoxy, get out he diamond cup wheel and start over, sorry. If it was a solvent, try a solvent carried dye or pigment and reseal with solvent. It works in a pinch

Yeah the solvent or Xylene will "attack" the Micro Topping and sometimes turn it as soft and rubbery as vinyl. BUT.. over the next day or two.. the Micro Topping should harden back up and turn rock hard since it is impregnated with Acrylic Sealer.. at least that is our experience...

I have a very similar job and have removed the sealer in two test areas with Newlook Easystrip 3000 tried Easystrip 2000 it was not quite powerful enough. I found timing was the most important factor if left on to long it would eat into the micro topping and neutralizing is important.Good luck.

If it was me, Id roughen up the sealer and re-overlay right on top of it. Stripping sealer is a MAJOR pain in the ass. You do have to sand that pentimento before staining like someone else said.
