 Old world highlighting

I just finished some retaining walls with a polymer cemtious overlay and sealed with a solvent based tinted sealer. The customer wants an 'Old World' look applied to the finish. I read about several techniques but would would like some input on the type of product. What can I use to highlight that won't reactivate xylene based sealer and cause runs?
Thanks

You could create an "old world" look by going over your sealer with a diluted version of the same with some color and apply it with sponged or rags. Just take one part clear sealer, add two parts xylene, some colorants compatible with solvent base sealers and then apply. You can apply with a pump spray then follow up with rags and sponges or a textured roller. I would not recommend using water base stains over the solvent sealer.

I did a lot of this on horizontal overlays but don't see why not it would not work vertically.

how big is this job?

3000 sq ft. I tried your suggestions before I posted and it looked like crap to me and the client. I was hoping someone had tried something else. I think we are just going to leave the 'old world look' in the old world and go with what we have. We re-coated the the test area and will just use manufactured stone on the corners to provide accents.

I make my own waterbased stains, gels and washes and I do a lot of "old world". I haven't tried them with a xylene sealer to see how they react but now I'm curious. I would like to try to see what art said and compare it to my products. What is the sealer your your using? I'll have to see if it's available in SoCal. If you ever have a project like this you need help with color or whatever, email me a photo or put it up on the forum and I'll try to help. Do you have a photo you can post so we can see what your doing? I really like to see what others have done or works in progress. It's amazing how many different looks you can get. I've put in an up-close photo of an old world look that I recently completed so you can see some detail and color.

Hope this helps. Jeff Datin

Hi deco-art, thanks for asking. It makes me feel good about the work I do when people ask quetions such as this. There were no stamps involved in this project. This is all hand-carved with techniques I have created myself over the last ten years. I teach these techniques in my classes too!

Sorry I can't help you with a stamp resource for this, But I will be comming out with videos on this technique in the very near future.

Thanks for your interest!

I'm always ready to learn new stuff. I really like the pictures that you posted. What mix are you using? Is it the same as for your rocks? If you make a video I want to be the first person to get one. Thanks.

Jeff your Old World Photo looks great and those are awesome colorations. The texture is unique and I can't wait to see your videos. I'm a concrete Artisan and do lots of hand texture & Vertical Carving techniques so I'm very interested in that one. Looks great and keep up the detailed work. I'm Jody Smith from Overlay Solutions LLC.

Hi Jody, Thanks for the compliments! I haven't had a chance to finish my videos yet because I've been so busy with our new site. If your interested in vertical carving you should see our site. It's the Concrete Artists Network and we have a lot of really great people there now. I come back here now and then but the traffic here is very low for our style of work. Check it out if you like and I'll let you know when my products are available. Heres the link to the site:

If you have any other questions you can e-mail me or contact me here

Thanks again
