I hired someone to overlay and stain my patio. The job is finished.(the concrete has been sealed) I do not like the finished product. The color is too dark and contrasts too much with my yellow stucco house. Can I sand down or grind the surface to eliminate the seal and the majority of the color and restain?

If you grind it you will remove the overlay. Did the contractor show you any samples of how the finished product would resemble?

Your only real option would be to grind off and start all over.

Some products can be overlayed over the top of sealers, but its probably best just to start over if you dont like it. But if you chose a sample from the installer and the finished product is a pretty close representation then you cant expect him to re-do it for free or even re-do it at all

Thanks for the reply. If I could take off just enough of the overlay to eliminate the seal and the surface color could I then restain with a lighter color. I realize that there is no way to get all of the color off due to the texture finish. How far would you have to grind before you start getting back to the white overlay? If the overlay is say 3/8" and you take off an 1/8"? Obviously, I am a novice in this area but in my mind I am thinking that you would end up with two colors similar to using two colors when stamping- a color in the hardner and another color in the release-giving you a base color and an accent color.

oh, that it were only so easy, john,,, most sealers're only mils thick & some're tough as carbide nails,,, certainly worth a try, tho.
