Is anyone using a laser tool to help layout tile patterns to score? I was laying out a diagonal tile pattern alone the other day. Helper couldnt make it. Couldnt use a chalk line alone. Just measured points and used a 5' straight edge, soapstone to connect the dots. Thought there has to be a better way. Would a laser guide work? Before I spend the money, would like to get some input on which ones are best.

I use a small laser I bought at the WOC this year. It is a CST/Berger ILM-XT Mini Laser. Very small but acurrate to 100 feet. I use it on all my flatwork, as well as layouts of countertops. Last week I used it for diamond cutting a pattern in a floor. I put it at the destination end of my cut so the red light actually pinpointed on my saw blade and I could watch my cut follow into the laser point. I did snap chalk lines but didn't really use them because the laser worked so well.

i use one all the time. but along with a 14' screed and soapstone or crayola chalk just to plot the lines. the problem with using the laser line to cut is that unless the room is relatively dark, the red line usually fades out before you get to the next wall. and also, even if you use a dust vac, the residual dust spit out from under the front of the saw will blot out the red line and make it hard to see during cutting. the laser i have shoots out perpendicular lines, which is nice. it makes the perfect square for you. i don't remember the brand, but i'll take a look at let you know.
