Has anyone ever tried this? If so, what sort of prep is required?

Yes. But it all depends on the strength and integrity of the exposed aggregate concrete.

Due to concrete expanding and contracting over time in extreme heat, along with frigic cold and freeze-thaw cycling in some regions of the country, the aggregate/stone becomes loose and pops out occur.

If you proceed with an overlayment, you need to first make sure that all loose aggregate on the surface is removed. Also, suggest that you apply a coat of epoxy over the surface (after doing all necessary cleaning/prep work) which will help lock the stone in place ... be sure to broadcast fine sand into the wet epoxy as you go in order to create a profile for maximum mechanical bonding of the overlayment.

chris, this is just a wag but your job's probably not subject to extreme free-thaw contraction,,, there're 2 basic finishes both exposed agg: 1's either ' seeded ' into the surface OR surface retarder was used then the paste'd be wash'd off the next day ),,, the 2nd's an epoxy o'lay w/agg in the mix,,, even being reinvent'd today.

if the 2nd, rent a conc scarifier w/carbide teeth,,, { rci, nation's rent, united },,, figure 200sf per hr w/2 guys - 1 running machine, the other sweeping, shoveling, & bagging spoil,,, hand touch-up w/diamond grinders,,, 2 or 3" chisel bits & elec chipping guns work well, too.

exposed agg's easy - std prep & broom the base coat or 2, then the ' fill ' coat as your choice of mtl dictates.

We've done it quite a few times with no problems just be sure to add in extra material because you will use more with all the voids caused by the aggr.

So the primer will bond to the aggregate?

i've no idea if YOUR ' primer ' would adhere, chris, as i've only used eC for dec conc overlays,,, our base coat adheres,,, its not all paste all the time.
