Planning a stamped concrete project.

The first thing a project owner should do is to become familiar with the process of stamping concrete, whether your project is a stamped concrete patio or driveway a basic knowledge of the process will greatly help you making educated decisions and most important: You will know what to expect.

If you are contemplating stamped concrete for a project it means that you have an idea already of what you want and have seen some stamped concrete work and like the look, the next step is to pick up a color and a design for your stamped concrete.

If doing a stamped concrete patio, you should consider picking up a pattern that does not have a pronounce or deep texture so it will be easier on your feet, also, consider a lighter color so it stays cooler in hot summer months.

If your project is a stamped concrete driveway then the depth and texture of the pattern is not as important. The color may be chosen to match part of the house or a specific feature such as stone or brick walls.

Options: There are many options when choosing a certain look for your stamped concrete and here we list a few of them for you to consider.

  • Base Color & Release Powder Color: You have to choose one color for the body of the stampeded concrete and one for the accent or antiquing color. Usually the base color is lighter and the release powder darker or a contrasting color. The combination of two contrasting colors gives stamped concrete a more natural appearance.
  • Color hardener or Integral Color: Color hardener is a dry shape application that is broadcast on the top of the concrete while the concrete is still fresh to impart a base color. Integral Colors are mixed in the concrete and provide a color thorough the thickness of the slab. Both have pro's and con's and the contractor may have a preference of one over the other done correctly either one should give you a great look.
  • Patterns: Though there are hundreds of patterns available consult with your contractor which patterns are available to him, most stamped concrete contractors will carry 5 to 10 different textures o offer their clients. Most popular patterns are Random Stone, Ashler Slate, Cobblestone, Brick and Textured Skins.
  • Borders: If you want to enhance your stamped concrete project further you can add a decorative border to your patio or driveway, doing a border during stamped concrete installation will require more time and may cost a fraction more but it is a great addition and a positive enhancement.
  • Acid Stain: Acid Stain is a coloring process that may greatly add to your stamped concrete project in terms of natural appearance and coloring options.
